WSOP Commentary – Year of the Chainsaw?
While some have been going about poker fun at poker’s “lovable nit”, Kessler has turned around and cashed 8 times at this year’s WSOP. You read that right 8 times.
Nikolay Evdakov cashed 10 times in the 2008 World Series of Poker. That is the current record. Don’t laugh, but there are enough events left where Kessler could conceivably break the record. I honestly don’t think he will break it, but I do think he might give tying it a sweat.
However, let’s play soothsayer and ponder what would happen if Kessler went into the Main Event tied with Edvakov at 10. I can just see the min-cash talk starting at about 1,000 players out of the money.
However, I have been comparing Kessler’s WSOP results 2010 with Edvakov’s year in 2008. Here is Edvakov’s year:

From first glance, you can see that Edvakov had larger individual cashes than Kessler, but the one thing that Edvakov was missing was a final table appearance. Kessler more than fit that bill by finishing 2nd in the Stud 8 or Better World Championship. Edvakov didn’t make his first final table until this year.
Who had the better year? Well, financially Kessler did. Even if Kessler doesn’t even tie the record, it can be argued that Kessler had a better year than Edvakov due to the press his cashes have received. Very few people outside of those covering the events here remember that Edvakov holds that record. (Honestly, I know a few people that cover these events that were here that year that don’t remember that fact.)
I haven’t seen Edvakov sporting any patches as a result of his past triumph. Kessler proudly wears the Doyle’s Room logo. Granted, Kessler had this before the series, but then again, who knows. Maybe the sponsorship gave Kessler the needed extra push.
Regardless, Kessler has had a monster year and the year is not over with yet. Will this turn out to be a record year or maybe even a bracelet year for the “Chainsaw?” Only a few events remain, so time is running out for Kessler to make this the “Year of the Chainsaw.”
