Put Retirement Talk on Hold – Gus Hansen Wins First Bracelet
Recently, I wrote an article about Gus Hansen and whether it was time for him to retire.
Well, I guess we can hold off the retirement plans for a while as Hansen just delivered a healthy helping of “Fuck you compncards” by winning the £10,350 No-Limit Hold’em High Roller Heads-Up at the World Series of Poker Europe.
Hansen navigated his way through a field of 103 players to finally make it heads-up with Jim Collopy. The final match was tied up 1-1 when play was paused until today to allow for the players to play in the Main Event.
After both busted out, they decided to play the final match today. After falling to a 2-1 chip disadvantage early in match three, Hansen stormed back and finally took down the title with a mere pair of fours.
Does winning this event mean that all of a sudden Hansen will become a cash game wizard? No. What it will likely mean is that some may be a little more willing to stake him, especially that he now won his first bracelet.
I am happy to see Gus win in many ways. He never won a bracelet and that was a glaring omission from an otherwise stellar tourney resume.
Also, if nothing else this has to be good for his self confidence. The £288,409 top prize also can’t hurt.
It would be nice if this could turn out to be the turning point that gets Hansen back on the winning track. Then again, it may prove to be just another small hit that gets gobbled up in a few short hours online. Time will tell.
