Big Names Showing Up at the World Series of Poker Europe

So we are down to the final table of Event #2 of the World Series of Poker Europe and it looks like the pros are continuing their dominance at the table. JP Kelly took down the Event #1 bracelet to technically make him yet another multi-bracelet winner for 2009. Kelly took the $1,500 PL Holdem event in Vegas this summer. Chris Ferguson finished in 15th.

Event #2 was literally dominated by pros at the final table. Howard Lederer, Hoyt Corkins, Erik Cajelais, Men “The Master” Nguyen, Mats Gavatin, and Chris Bjorin all made the final. The final table was played down to five with Gavatin entering tomorrow as chip leader and Nguyen in 3rd.

Lederer’s performance was just short of brilliant. Entering the day, he was around 20th out of 22 players remaining. He was able to battle his was to a 9th place finish. Corkins was also among the short stacks at the start of play. Men “The Master” Nguyen was never really in any serious chip danger and is showing why he remains one of the most feared poker players in the world in tournament play.

For those that don’t know, Nguyen has six bracelets. If he were to win this event, it would tie him with Phil Ivey at seven bracelets. Hopefully he doesn’t get drunk off his ass and fuck it up. Although he comes with a storied past, I still am rooting for Nguyen to win. I like to see history made, even if the history makers are controversial.

The only thing that I am not liking so far is that several big names do not seem to be performing up to par. I was really hoping that Mike Matusow and Phil Ivey would have a better showing. Hopefully they will be able to turn it on during the last two events.

Event #3 is the PLO event for the WSOP-E. A star studded field of both US and European players will turn out for this. I say expect at least two well known US or International pros at the final table. (Well known as in that casual poker fans over here have actually heard of him.)
